Charles de St. Leu was of Huguenot descent on the side of both his father and mother, the latter being of the families of Girod of Switzerland and Daval of France; he was bookkeeper in the house of Thornton Brothers and Co.; he was elected on 6th April, 1816, a Director of "La Providence;" he was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. The St. Leus were descended from the French nobility. St. Leu is a small village 16 or 18 miles from Paris. In the "Morning Chronicle" of 17th March, 1837, is the following paragraph: "The last residence of the last of the Condes,the Chateau of St. Leu, has just been transferred to the possession of Mr. Fontanil, a watchmaker of Paris, who is said to have paid for it 600,000 francs to the Baroness de Fouchdres."
