Richard Buswell Underwood was the 9th child and youngest son of Thomas Underwood and Mary Ann Buswell. Richard married Harriott Marshall, a half caste Maori lady, when he was 44 and Harriott was 18. He emigrated to Australia in 1852 and then on to New Zealand in 1853. Richard and Harriott had 13 children, Alice being the eldest of five daughters.
