  • Hubert Herkomer was an accomplished portrait artist, illustrator, printmaker, stage designer, filmmaker, writer and teacher. His family left Bavaria (Germany) in 1851 and lived briefly in Cleveland, Ohio, before settling in Southampton in 1857. Herkomer was a very versatile individual. He became ARA in 1879 and a full Academician in 1890. In 1899 he was ennobled by Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, being permitted to change his name to "von Herkomer". He built a grandiose house in Bushey, Herts, named "Lululaund" after his second wife who tragically died in the aftermath of a road accident. He founded a School of Art at Bushey in 1883. He succeeded John Ruskin as Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford from 1885 to 1894. He was knighted in 1908.
