  • In 1855, William Akersten came to Nelson on behalf of James Henty & Co, Melbourne, to adjust the insurance on the damaged wool cargo of the `Aden'. As owner of the `Maid of Alicante', he brought goods and passengers to Nelson. He set up a ships chandlery and acted as stevedore and marine surveyor in a business at the Port. With some training as a civil engineer he became the Superintendent of Works for the province, designing and building wharves and bridges. He proposed making the Cut through the Boulder Bank. He was a MPC in the 1860s and Nelson Councilor. He arrested Bully Hayes at Crocxelles on behalf of the owner of his sheep and brought him to Nelson.
