An advocate of rural and economic reform, known by his "benevolent exertions to ameliorate the condition of the poor." Chairman of the Committee on Education, 1838 and on the Health of the poorer Classes in large Towns, 1840. Commissioner on the health of towns, 1843-6. Succeeded to his father's property, Hatton Grange, Shropshire, 1834. Also of Walford Manor. J.P. and D.L. for Shropshire. High Sheriff, 1854. "A bold rider to hounds, a fine shot and a good naturalist." Married (1) Feb. 7, 1812, Elizabeth, dau. of William Hawkins Muccleston, M.D., and had issue; (2) 1854, Catherine, dau. of the Rev. George Buckston, of Derbs., and widow of [p.531] Graves Archer, Esq., of Mount John, Co. Wicklow. Author, Short Journal of a Visit to Canada and to the States of America in 1860; An Essay on the Employment of the Poor; Essay on the Beneficial Direction of Rural Expenditure; An Outline of the Smaller British Birds; A Plea for the Working Classes. Died May 19, 1862, at his residence, 5, Bolton Row, Piccadilly, "from the effects of falling through a gap in the floor at the opening of the International Exhibition." (Burke, L.G.; G.
