Sir Matthew Wood (1768–1843), was from 1809 to 1810 High Sheriff and from 1816 to 1817 Lord Mayor of London. He was the first Baronet created by the new Queen Victoria (in 1837) and took his title from Hatherley House, Gloucestershire. This was reputedly in reward for his deeds as the trustee of the affairs of the Queen's father the Duke of Kent. It was owing to Wood's arrangements as trustee that Queen Victoria was born in England instead of in a foreign country.
Matthew Wood, born in Devon, had been twice Lord Mayor of London, one of four Members of parliament for the City of London and in the 1820's a leading champion of Queen Caroline when George IV was trying to disown her. These activities attracted the support of Elizabeth Wood (no relation), sister of the millionaire banker Jemmy Wood, owner of Hatherley House until his death in 1836.
Matthew developed a close friendship with Jemmy Wood who, in his will, named Matthew Wood as one of four executors equally sharing his estate, said to be worth around one million pounds. After a long dispute over the will, Sir Matthew eventually obtained formal ownership of Hatherley House shortly before his death in 1843.
