Note 1:
He Guarded Duke After Abdication. Det.-Dgt. Phil Attfield, the Scotland Yard detective who accompanied the Duke of Windsor as "bodyguard" in his dramatic dash across the Channel after the abdication, is leaving the Metropolitan Police force at the end of the month. His resignation was in Police orders last night.
Sgt. Attfield is to take up a security appointment with the War Office, where he will revert to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel which he reached in the late war.
During his service with the Special Branch he acted as bodyguard not only to the Duke of Windsor but also to Mr and Mrs Anthony Eden. He was present at the Duke of Windsor's wedding.
Probably one of the most colourful personalities at Scotland Yard, he joined the Merchant Navy at 16 and sailed round the world before quitting seafaring in 1928 to join the Metropolitan Police. In his war service he was twice mentioned in despatches. He is a Scot, born in Kincardine. His mother was a member of the Clan Rose of Kilravock.
