Note on Husband: George Short
Will of George Short of New Sarum Wiltshire grocer, not dated. To my wife Mary Short for life the interest in the 3 percent reduced stock amounting to £214 10s. 8d arising out of £7151 5s. 10d now vested in the said stock and also the occupation of my present dwelling house and use of furniture; to son Robert Short the new built premises partly occupied by Mrs John Pike in the Chuse Cross adjoining Mrs Stevens draper; at decease of my wife I give to son George Short the freehold premises lately purchased of Mrs Curtoys now in occupation of Mr Hicks hatter and myself; at decease of my wife also to my daughter Susan Short £2000; to my daughter Maria Clemitson £2000, these legacies out of the property enjoyed by my wife during her life and I wish it to be understood that I give the said £2000 to each of my daughters for their sole use benefit and disposal and at no time subject to the debts or control of their husbands; at decease of my wife I give to son Robert Short my household furniture; out of the property I hold in the New 4 percent stock I give to Sophia Loat daughter of my sister the late Mrs Petty £75; to the children of William Short of Rockbourne Wilts £200 share and share alike; to the children of Thomas and Mary Waters of Stratford Wilts £500 share and share alike; to children of George Short late of Briamore Hants £200; to children of James and Mary Kilvington £200; to children of Robert Short late of Kingston Hall Dorset £50; and lastly to all grandchildren of William and Jane Holly formerly of Scarthfield Farm Hants £75 having confidence that the money in the foregoing legacies will be properly applied ; I direct my assignees to sell out as much stock in the New 4 percent stock as will realise £725 to pay the said Sophia Loat £75 William Short £200 Thomas and Mary Waters £200 the children of Robert Short £50 and to James and Mary Kilvington £200 for the purposes aforesaid but the money assigned to the children of George Short and William Holly’s grandchildren I wish to place under the management of their friends my two sons Thomas Waters and Peter Clemitson; to my sister Hannah Knight £15 per annum for her sole use and benefit; to Sarah Hayter of Damerham Wilts eight shillings per week for life; to Susan Mist at present living with Mr James Kilvington £10 per annum for life; in respect to my son in law Charles Batten there appears to be on the balance of his account upwards of £1249 due to me, this I freely forgive him and direct that the two notes of hand of his be given up to him and I give him £15 per annum for life; to every servant living with me at my decease male and female £4 each; my funds at present in the New 4 percent stock is £3300 out of which £725 directed to sundry legacies and £275 more as soon after as my two sons Thomas Waters and Peter Clemitson shall judge necessary for the benefit of George Short’s children and William Holly’s grandchildren; the interest on what remains after paying debts and funeral expenses etc to remain as security for the dividends to Hannah Knight Sarah Hayter Susan Mist and Charles Batten and at the death of the said parties I bequeath to son Robert Short the whole principal and interest then due in the said 4 percents and whatever remains after paying daughters Susan and Maria £200 each out of my property in the 3 percent reduced at the death of my wife I give to my two sons Robert and George Short jointly share and share alike; and should I give up business which I am very desirous of doing and to retire upon other interest and money from houses or interest of any kind I also give equally to my two sons; I request that Dr & Mrs Jeans and Mr & Mrs Atfield will accept a mourning ring; lastly to sons Robert and George Short jointly the my stock in trade with all book debts etc and implements together with the leasehold premises where it is carried on; sons Robert and George Short Thomas Waters and Peter Clemitson execs.
Appeared personally Robert Squarey of New Sarum druggist and John Swayne of Wilton Wilts gentleman who swore that they were acquainted with George Short of New Sarum and his handwriting, 13 Jun 1825.
