Note:
Mrs. Roe, wife of John Septimus Roe, R.N., first Surveyor-General of Western Australia, was Miss Matilda Bennett, daughter of George Bennett (sic), Cheshire, England, and married her husband on January 8, 1829. After coming to this country she brought into the world 13 children. Her life was naturally very circumscribed, but she was a brave, uncomplaining, charitable woman. She used to tell her grandchildren how the natives came to the huts of Lady Stirling and herself, and would take up their babies, examine their feet and clothes, about which they were very curious, gently putting them back on receipt of beads, jewellery and sugar. Mrs. Roe has left a goodly number of descendants, her children and grandchildren intermarrying with the Stone, Phillips, Burges, Hassell, Cooke, Ferguson, and other families.
