  • Mr George Cutts, who was born in West Retford in 1823, was the son of Mr Joseph Cutts, who came to Retford from Wellow, and was a saddler. Mr George Cutts was originally in business in West Retford, and at the great emigration in the bad times he and his wife set sail for Australia - where he had two brothers - but was shipwrecked and his wife was drowned. Upon his return to Retford he commenced business as a grocer and wine and spirit merchant in the Market Place.

    Mr Cutts played an active part in local affairs, and was twice Mayor of East Retford, in 1874-75 and 1875-76. He was one of the first members of Retford Volunteer Company and retired with the rank of colour-sergeant. He was a Governor of the Retford Grammar School, a member of the Charity Trustees, an Income tax Commissioner and a member of the governing body of the Retford Hospital.

    Mr Cutts was a Justice of the Peace for the borough for over 20 years and was the senior magistrate. In politics he was a strong Conservative. His parents were Wesleyans, with whom he was associated up to the time of the death of his mother, when in 1888 he became a member of the Congregational Church of which his wife was a member.

Note on Husband: George Cutts (1)
