  • William Paley was a sizar (undergraduate) at Christ’s College Cambridge graduated BA in 1733-4 and in 1735 became Vicar of Helpston, Northamptonshire. He was a minor canon at Peterborough and it was whilst here that his son William was born in 1743. In 1744 he was appointed Headmaster of Giggleswick Grammar School with a salary of £80 afterwards raised to £200. He held this post until his death in 1799. (There is a Paley House at Giggleswick School at Settle, Yorkshire named after him.) He was described in the Giggleswick School Register as “Cheerful and jocose, a great wit, rather coarse in his language”.
