Individual Note

Frederick Ernest Herrick, 26, clerk, was charged on remand, before the Lord Mayor, with embezzling on the 26th March, 1891, the sum of £3 received by him on account of the Barge Owners' Protection Society, 90, Lower Thames-street, and also embezzling other amounts and falsifying the books of the society. Mr. Avory prosecuted; Mr. I. Barrington Matthews defended. Mr. Avory said the Prisoner was in the service of Messrs. Farnfield, solicitors, as clerk for several years, and among other duties he had to keep the books of the Barge Owners' Protection Society. He appeared ever since 1888 to have been systematically embezzling money by omitting sums from the cash book which he had received from subscribers to the society by way of subscriptions. The Prisoner had also forged his masters' endorsement to cheques, which he had paid into the bank account for the purpose of covering up deficiencies in his cash, and the total amount which had been discovered up to the present time was about £481. The subscription book was correctly kept by the Prisoner, but he had omitted sums from the cash book, or, in some instances, he entered smaller amounts.
