A classical scholar at Felstead School, Colonel Donald Portway, CBE, became Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Khartoum after retiring from the Mastership of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, at the age of seventy. A Proctor renowned in history, a swimming Blue, the only man in either university to win his weight four years running in Oxford v. Cambridge boxing, and probably the only one to command combatant troops in the field in the retreat from Mons in the First World War and also the retreat to Dunkirk in the Second. He also saw military service in India, then Korea and Nepal with UNESCO.
