CAZALY William. 10 September 1869. The Will of William Cazaly late of 48 Red Lion Street Holborn in the County of Middlesex deceased who died 7 May 1869 at 14 Beacon Hill Camden Road in the County aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oath of Susanna Cazaly of 14 Beacon Hill aforesaid Widow the Relict the sole Executrix. Effects under £100.
In 1884, Susanna (or Susan) wrote to Charles James Cazaly, letter in Wagner Papers in the Huguenot Society Library in London. The text of the letter is as follows.
"12 Rue Poisson, Paris. 1st April 1884.
My dear Charles. I have received your letter and I am very happy to give you any information that I can recollect about the family. I sympathize with you in your affliction which compels you to solicit the benefits of the French Hospital. My husband's name was really Guillaume Cazaly altho' he was called William, his father was Pierre Cazaly and he and your father were brothers. Their father was one of several brothers Protestant Refugees who fled from France, about the year 1745 or later, I cannot tell you the exact date. The eldest of them was named Guillaume Cazaly, he commenced business as a stocking weaver, setting up just two looms at first at the corner of Spittal Square, Bishopsgate St where he lived many years much respected. He made a fortune there and returned to the South of France at the age of 80, he purchased an estate named Peuch Bouquet at Sommieres near Nimes where he lived 19 years and died at the age of 99 in 1824 and was buried with his wife in his own grounds. He had one son named Guillaume who died while still a young man, leaving an infant son also named Guillaume Adolphe who is still living. I have not heard of him for some years but I have heard of him from his cousin (..?..) Ernest Griold of Geneva. Adolphe sold his estate some years ago. My husband's grandfather was one of the brothers who came from France, your grandfather was also one. So you have a decided chance to the benefits of the French Hospital being one of the descendants in a direct line from the Protestant Refugees, and I trust the Directors will take a favourable view of your case. I can give references as to the trustworthiness of my statement which I know to be true and shall be happy to do any thing in my power to verify what I have said when I come to London in June. Trusting you will meet with success in your application and with kind regards, I am, yours sincerely, Susan Cazaly.
P.S. Your cousin William's father and his wife lived with the Pastor of the Reformed Church and all their children were baptized by him, his name was (..?..) Cazaly, their names were Frank who died when he was 17, Thomas, Pierre, Guillaume, Jaques, Sophie, Louise and Sarah. The last of them died three or four years ago, Jaques or James the father of Frank whom you know. The Church in Threadneedle St has been pulled down many years ago, I have no doubt but the registers of baptism have been preserved somewhere. I hereby state all this to show that the origin of the family is certainly French. "
