  • Herman Gustave Herkomer was born in Cleveland but settled in London for 30 years from the early 1880s until returning to the USA in 1912. He moved to California with his family in 1917. He was recognised in art circles for his work as a portrait painter. In 1876 he was among the group of German artists in Cleveland who set up an art club that later became the Cleveland Art School.

    In France and England, he earned a much-respected reputation for portraiture of prominent persons. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy of London. In 1891 he was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

    His portrait of his cousin Hubert Herkomer, painted in 1887, is now in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, USA.
